High quality business services with a strong focus on client service are critical in supporting the economic growth of the countries in which Maris operates. The Business Services division provides a range of services primarily to support large multinational customers, but also local businesses. The three core pillars of the division are Equator Energy, the largest provider of solar power to commercial & industrial customers in East Africa, MT Group, our regional machinery dealership and Equator Services, a support services provider to the USD 125bn
LNG projects in Northern Mozambique.
Maris set up Equator Energy in 2016, a renewable energy company, which provides solar power to industrial and commercial clients across sub-Saharan Africa. The business designs, finances, installs and then sells power to companies, guaranteeing a reduction on their annual power bills as well as a cleaner and more reliable source of electricity.
Equator Energy has provided a wide range of on-grid, off-grid and hybrid solutions to its clients. Customers have included mines, flower farms, hotels, a variety of industrial customers and factories, Tatu City, warehousing complexes and remote forestry operations. Equator Energy’s latest project, in conjunction with a guarantee from USAid, is to provide a utility-scale solar solution to the largest IPP in Bosaso, the capital of Puntland, Somalia.
MT Group is the exclusive distributor of JCB construction machinery and power products in Angola, Tanzania and Rwanda. JCB is the second largest machinery brand in Africa after Caterpillar and is uniquely geared into the twin rising trends of rapid urbanisation and large scale infrastructure developments. MT Group also also represents numerous other leading brands including New Holland agricultural machinery, Schwing Stetter cement mixers, Kaeser air compression & Parker filtration. MT Group is always seeking additional agency relationships.
Maris also owns Equator Services, a company set up in 2012, focused on providing support services resource sector clients in remote locations across Africa. The company is based in Palma and Pemba, Northern Mozambique and provides a wide range of services to the major oil & gas and engineering companies working on the Liquified Natural Gas construction projects on the Afunghi peninsula.
Earlier this decade, Mozambique discovered the 4th largest gas reserves in the world in the Rovuma basin. The expected investment to bring these reserves into production will constitute one of the largest construction projects in the world over the next decade with an estimated total cost of USD 125bn. Equator Services is exceptionally well positioned to take advantage of the demand for various support services from the major companies operating on the site, including construction machinery rental, accommodation and food provision.
Other previous investments, now been profitably exited, include Untu Capital, one of Zimbabwe’s largest microfinance companies and Afritise, South Sudan’s largest advertising company.
